Happy August!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you have taken a few minutes to complete the goals in the last email!! (Have you????? \ud83e\udd28 We shall never know [unless you tell us].) Now we come to the next part of our recap \u2014 things to do over a small amount of time. They may take a few days to begin or complete, but once you do, they are always good learning opportunities and are eco-friendly! \ud83c\udf3f Hopefully, these will lead you to be more mindful, and regardless of which ones you\u2019re able to complete, you\u2019ll discover new ways to reduce your carbon and trash footprint. Please do them!!!!!! And come back next month for the finale of this season\u2019s eco-etiquette challenges!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, we understand that these may not always be attainable (due to money, time, housing, etc.), and we hope that you do what you can and find your own solutions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcdd Write to companies and legislators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf74 Bring reusable straws, cups, napkins, silverware, and takeout containers with you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udecd Bring reusable grocery bags (you can bring back paper or plastic bags from the checkout instead of buying bags), produce bags, and bulk-food containers to stores (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byocco.com\/\">BYOC Co.<\/a> is a store in downtown Ann Arbor where you can refill your own containers with things like soap!!!); also, you can look for options that use less packaging, like bulk sections in stores<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\uddf4 Invest in biodegradable alternatives of things you use (glitter, shampoo, etc.) \u2014 though biodegradable things still aren\u2019t perfect, and things that don\u2019t have harmful chemicals in the first place are ideal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\uddfe Learn what you can <a href=\"https:\/\/potatosquad.org\/index.php\/2020\/09\/01\/september-challenge\/\">recycle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/potatosquad.org\/index.php\/2021\/07\/01\/july-2021-compost\/\">compost<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/potatosquad.org\/index.php\/2021\/09\/01\/september-2021-trash-recycling-and-hazardous-waste\/\">etc.<\/a>, and find places to donate specific things (for example, you may be able to give packing supplies to a post office)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\uddc1 Use reusables like silicone baking supplies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc5a If you can, invest in better quality things that will last longer rather than having to replace things many times<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 Use solar batteries and lights<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\ude78 If you have periods, use <a href=\"https:\/\/potatosquad.org\/index.php\/2021\/05\/01\/may-2021-bathroom-laundry-room\/\">reusable period products<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\ude72 If you are a baby\/baby\u2019s caretaker, use reusable cloth diapers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\ude91 Attend item swaps, donate, and buy secondhand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udce3 Go to protests for the environment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\ude9b Learn to repair things<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcd6 Read articles, listen to podcasts, etc. about the environment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udd59 Keep a meal plan or list of what needs to be used up, and freeze things you know can&#8217;t be used before they go bad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udcbb Subscribe to email lists for <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ztPeducg14QEeKUmeQdwXaQ8nuhjmYSdbUbi7UYbtTo\/edit?usp=sharing\">environmental groups<\/a> (\ud83d\ude08) and\/or follow them on social media<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udde6 Hang your clothes up to dry instead of using a dryer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udfe2 Set your appliances to economy mode\/water-saving mode\/settings that reduce water and electricity consumption<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udd54 As always, be a potato!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action potato #1: The Michigan Public Services Commission is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mpsc\/commission\/news-releases\/2022\/07\/07\/mpsc-reopens-record-in-line-5-tunnel-case\">taking public comment<\/a> on Enbridge\u2019s Line 5, which threatens everyone in this area with potential oil spills. Enbridge has a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oilandwaterdontmix.org\/problem\">unsafe pipeline operation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narf.org\/cases\/enbridges-line-5-pipeline\/\">disregarding Indigenous land rights<\/a>. Here is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oilandwaterdontmix.org\/mpsc_reject_enbridge_line_5_oil_tunnel?recruiter_id=102700\">email campaign<\/a>, though people can also email <a>mpscedockets@gmail.com<\/a> with the subject line \u201cComments on Case U-20763.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action potato #2: Michigan\u2019s primary election is tomorrow!
